Celebrity.
What if we treated poets like pop stars?
The world might be a better place.
Right now we thank the dead for their rhymes,
not knowing of Poe’s twisted face.
What if we held books like bitcoin?
As rich and wise-making treasures.
Right now we thank the dead for their pages,
but still ask how Mary’s monster measures.
What if we saw movies as scripts?
As the hours and days of a life poured into it—
an enthralling idea pulled out of thin air,
yet Romero’s rarely praised for his limits.
They want things NOW! And that’s no shock.
Things they can see, touch, feel, source, smell, and stalk.
They want to be inspired, and to see God—
craving a story of rags to wages.
They keep their feasts from the starving artist,
paying mind to rag-clad girls on stages.
READ! I know it’s hard,
and there’s time for nothing.
I do understand why you’d rather watch or listen
than sit around discussing.
IT’S ALL ART!
Pulling things from thin air.
If we would just think about our resources—
there’s more than enough to share.
The world’s taught you, taught me, taught us
to praise pop stars, bitcoin, and the big screen;
could we all just stop and wipe clean the lens of celebrity?
You might then see what our energy exchange really means.
